Robots jellyfishes will investigate sea depths

Very often scientists for the developments "spot" something at the nature. For example, recently the team of the American scientists from the Florida Atlantic university in common with the colleagues from Management of naval researches has developed robotic jellyfishes who perfectly are suitable for observation of the underwater world and carrying out various search and prospecting operations.

As is reported by the editorial office of the Bioinspiration and Biomimetics edition, for carrying out tests researchers on the 3D-printer have unpacked 5 various versions of robots. Each of them had different rigidity and a little differing design elements. It has been made to check impact of the underwater environment on mechanisms and also clarifications of "passability" - an opportunity to get through narrow sites and to overcome obstacles. As one of authors of the project doctor Eric Engeberg has said, "Flexible robots have high potential in the field of studying and monitoring of underwater environments. Today the robots created just like fishes are extremely popular, however we have decided to use a form of a jellyfish as they are excellent swimmers too." The larva of a jellyfish of Aurelia aurita (big-eared Aurelia) has acted as a source of inspiration. The robot for maneuvering uses hydraulic networks. In his design there are 2 pumps for a rating of 8 feelers. Water in pumps is gathered from surrounding space and filled in in soft drives from where there is subsequent her emission for breakthrough commission. When pumps are switched-off, silicone of which feelers are made squeezes drives for one more emission of water. Such approach has helped to get rid of screws when designing the robot. "Robots could float through openings of already own diameter. In the future we plan to equip robojellyfishes with the sonar and the system of navigation. The main field of possible application - a research and monitoring of marine ecosystems for this reason the robot is manufactured of materials which will allow to avoid casual damage of sea inhabitants."
